Friday, July 31
1 pm - 4 pm   Museum is open. 

                       Operating Garden Train Display, Ron Hohneke will
                        have 6 different engines of his garden train set-up
                        running in the museum's west annex. These are
                        some of the trains that First Iowa State Bank has on
                        display for Albia's Victorian Stroll. See them in a
                        different setting.



Saturday, August 1
9 am - 4 pm     At the Monroe Co. Historical Society Museum,
                         John Jacobs of Rose Hill will display his collection
                         of mining memorabilia. A long time collector, John
                         will have many picture postcards, news articles and
                         mining items to be viewed.

9 am - 4 pm   Operating Garden Train Display, Ron Hohneke will
                        have 6 different engines of his garden train set-up
                        running in the museum's west annex. These are

                        display for Albia's Victorian Stroll. See them in a
                        different setting.

9 am - 11 am
   Leaving from the museum-tour to town of Buxton
                         and to the Buxton Cemetery. Jim Keegel, Buxton
                         landowner, will be the tour guide for the town; and
                         Rosalie Mullinix, museum volunteer, will give the
                         tour of the cemetery.

10 am              Departure APNC train ride (See information on left)

11 am - 1 pm
   Lunch time

1 pm               
At the Monroe Co. Historical Society Museum,
                        Carl Blomgren, former Albia resident and "Albia
                        Wall of Fame" member will give a talk –
                        “Memories of a Coal Camp Kid”.  Born in Buxton,
                        Carl will tell of growing up in the mining towns of
                        Haydock and Rex 5.

1 pm              Departure APNC train ride (See information on left)
                      (Was
temporarily dropped from schedule, but has
                      returned due to increased ticket sales... Call
                     Chamber, 641-932-5108, immediately to reserve
                     seat.)


2 pm - 4 pm   Leaving from the museum-tour to Consol, Haydock
                        and Bucknell areas with Gordon Peterson, grandson
                        of David Peterson, store owner in Buxton, Consol &
                        Bucknell,  as tour guide.

Sunday, August 2
1 pm - 4 pm   Museum is open.

               Leaving from the museum - tour to the mining town
                       of Hocking with Ernie Corso as tour guide.
                      
       (After the tour Ernie will give a talk and show mining
                             artifacts at the museum.)

Handouts of historical facts for these mining towns will be given out to tour participants.

The museum will need to take reservations for the tours.

Celebrating Our Beginnings: Mining & Railroads
This weekend celebrates the contributions that mining and railroads have made on our community.

Attention: Many of the tours for this weekend have space and capacity limits - make reservations early.
TICKETS AVAILABLE FOR ALBIA – MORAVIA TRAIN RIDES
To be held SATURDAY, AUGUST 1, 2009

Tickets for a roundtrip excursion from Albia to Moravia, as part of Celebrating Our Beginnings—Mining & Railroads, are available at the Albia Area Chamber of Commerce. 

Adult tickets will be offered at a suggested donation of $10 with child tickets at $5.  Tickets are non-refundable with rides running rain or shine.  The 10 am ride is SOLD OUT, the 1 pm ride has returned to the schedule... Ticket sales are brisk, contact the chamber ASAP. (updated noon 7/31/09)

The ride will be provided by the Appanoose County Community Railroad (APNC)  departuring at 10:00 am  from the north parking behind Albia Community High School.  (Note this departure site is a change.) Riders will check in 15 minutes prior to departure times on north side (back) of the Quiktron building accessed from C Ave West.  A volunteer will be on hand to collect tickets & assist passengers with boarding & de-boarding.  The ride is estimated to take 90-120 minutes.  There are two passenger cars with bench-type seating, open sides and covered with solid-surfaced canopy. 

The Railroad, located between Centerville and Albia, is comprised of routes formerly owned by the Norfolk Southern, the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific, and the Burlington Northern.  Riders will begin their excursion at the northern terminus of the Railroad in Albia, travel to the restored station at Moravia, where they will observe a “run-around” for the return trip to Albia. 

Ticket holders will also be included in drawings for donated door prizes.

Proceeds from the rides will benefit the Albia Sesquicentennial Committee.
